It occurred to me recently that there are lots of single ladies at pretty much any church one rocks up to, I mean lots and lots and lots of single ladies… Downside? Usually fewer single guys. A friend of mine told me she has been aware of this for some time and did not need reminding…

So if you’re tired of being single, I say we re-introduce an age old phenomena called ‘match making’. Apparently this has been going on for thousands of years but our generation appears to have lost this art generally speaking (I know some hate my ‘general speak’, but it helps to cut it short). So with ‘match making’, what happens is that a loving Christian sets up a ‘blind’ date with a single guy and a single lady who have potential together. This works really well I’m told because our friends know friends we don’t know, and so it creates a more extended network than we could ever imagine before.

Have you set up a date before? If not, have a go!!

I’ve been on a couple of ‘blind’ dates before and actually they were quite fun, I mean seriously, would I rather be at home watching TV and relishing in my singleness? Come on people, let’s be honest.

Recently I set up two for a date, it didn’t work out for them but they were still nonetheless very grateful. So I’m sure if you tried setting two up, odds are they’ll appreciate what you’ve done. After I set up this one friend, she then returned the favour which was a total surprise! So think about, plenty of good reasons to get out there people…

...Relativism was out and about BC, and is out and about again now AD.

“Scholars generally agree that the first ‘relativist’ was the ancient Greek philosopher Protagoras (approximately 490-421 BC)… what is true and false is determined not by things outside of a person, but simply by a person’s own perspective… Plato [428-348 BC] provided a devastating critique of Protagoras’ idea that ‘Man is the measure of all things’. If everything is relative to man’s perspective, argued Plato, that must also apply to Protagoras’ own idea that truth is relative… if Protagoras really thinks it is true that things are only true according to a person’s perspective, then, that would mean Protagoras’ idea is actually false because at least one truth (Protagoras’ idea) would then not be relative.”

The above is an excerpt from: A Spectator’s Guide to World Views (2007), edited by Simon Smart, pages 174-175.

Relativism was out and about BC, and is out and about again now AD. This world and its societies don’t ‘evolve’ through the supposed latest belief system, it goes in circles and never finds peace. Its ever changing restless consistency always wants more because it never holds true hope.

Thankfully we have a choice not to trust in this world and its incapability to provide a permanent solution. In Romans 15.13 it states “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”. Praise God!

...does not our behaviour reflect whether we are aware of the mighty presence of God? The times at which we are most prone to stray are the times at which we are failing to recognise God’s presence.

It has become apparent that I am prone to forgetting at times that I am always in the presence of God. Whenever I think of God, I think yes I belong to God. But the frequency with which I recognise I am in the presence of God is something to be worked on. Our consistency and level of awareness of God throughout each day has implications.

Think about it, does not our behaviour reflect whether we are aware of the mighty presence of God? The times at which we are most prone to stray are the times at which we are failing to recognise God’s presence.

One who is not aware of the presence of God can be one who is puffed up and showy in the sense that he or she thinks there is something to boast about. This does not relate to people who have extroverted or ‘loud’ personalities necessarily, it is more about the person’s attitude and heart towards God. So how does showiness look in front of God? How does it look in front of the God who owns the universe and holds eternal power and life? Can anyone compare their big house, flashy car or ‘important’ job title to the wonder and glory of God?

Jesus was deeply concerned about Jewish Pharisees who puffed up and credited themselves in the presence of God. It just looked plain silly to say something along the lines of ‘hey God look at me’ as though one could be compared on equal footing with God. In Matthew 23.12-14 Jesus said ‘For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces…”’. Who could not be humbled in the presence of God? When one is humbled it is an act of submitting to the grace of God and enjoying his presence like a Father. Not only is it enjoyable, he exalts us to sit beside him on his throne! In Revelation 3.21 Jesus says “To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne”. Basically being showy is just that, a show. The real masterpiece is evident through God’s grace to the human race.

So how does the Bible indicate one is aware they are in the presence of God? In Philippians 4.4-6 it says ‘Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything’. The world typically looks down upon the not so flashy human because it does not consider the presence of God. However we have reason to rejoice not on our own merit, but on the merit of Christ and his kindness to involve us in his kingdom. Once sin is done with and destroyed, the Spirit of God will no longer wrestle in man with his destructive desires, God’s work will be fully evident through his disciples.

To be a disciple of Christ is to be a co-heir with Christ and this surely outweighs the world’s idea of flashiness. In Romans 8.17 it says “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory”. To have but a few bricks (i.e. house) and shiny pieces of metal (i.e. ‘luxury’ car) compares quite poorly, to say the least, against one who has eternal inheritance from the creator of all. This is an outstanding act of which we can claim no credit. All thanks and praise goes to our Lord God.

To be consistently aware of the presence of God and the good things ahead in store for his disciples can help one avoid falling into the notion that the world’s idea of flashiness is something worth of aspiration. What is true and the real deal will be evident to all soon enough, worldly flashiness will soon pass away and everything that is held together by God will keep on keeping on.

So some questions for us all… Am I in the presence of God? When was the last time I did something and was aware of the presence of God? Do I compartmentalise God into certain parts of the day such as morning prayer and afternoon Bible reading and forget the rest of the day?

Christ did not do his deeds to obtain heaven thereby. That would have been a madness, for heaven was his already; he was the heir, it was his by inheritance. He did them freely for our sakes, considering nothing but our welfare, and to bring the favour of God to us again, and us to God.”

Danger, deceit, betrayal, murder, bravery, spiritual intervention, hope, restoration, the future. The Divine Library wraps all these emotions up in the one collection of ancient books. This text certainly knows how to cause a controversy; some nations prohibit its circulation with the fear of torture as punishment for its possession. So what is all the fuss and commotion about? One could say the Divine Library has a habit of contradicting human instinct. Social psychology tells us we are inherently selfish, the Divine Library speaks of giving without thought of reward; Idealist theory says the mind is the source and creator of all knowledge, the Divine Library claims the Lord is the author of life and incomprehensible knowledge. The problem doesn’t appear to lie within the claims but with the people that bet their life on it. It’s offensive to say “no” when everyone is saying “yes” to the latest cultural fad; be it Roman emperor worship, temple prostitution for the god Baal, ‘new-age’ spirituality or post-modernism.

The Divine Library contains 66 books and was written by 40 authors over a period of two thousand years. Through narratives, poetry, songs, sermons, prophecies, wisdom sayings, parables and letters a central theme appears. All the authors claim to have a relationship and knowledge of the one God. The central message claims we were originally intended for life and not death, and God reminded us of this in the flesh as Jesus when he conquered death by perfectly living as God would have it. Living any other way would move one away from God and the eternal life he offers. Jesus said “If you want to save your life, you will destroy it. But if you give up your life for me, you will save it.” (Luke 9.24). Basically we can’t see beyond this life on our own merit and only through Jesus and his merit can we conquer death and grasp eternal life. Being a good person doesn’t cut it because it is still likened to our own merit. Good works grow in occurrence after faith in Jesus produces the desire of such actions and thus we once again (as originally intended) begin to grow into the image of our Creator.

God delivers on his promise spoken of in the Divine Library. That we are destined not for a life of frustration and fear – but for love and hope; that we are destined not for 78 years (83 for females) with a few good memories – but for eternity with every moment a good one.

What does God want for us? Is it a good job, nice house, money to give to others? Is our focus to be using worldly possessions to demonstrate godliness? What if I don’t have worldly possessions, does that mean I can’t be godly? Perhaps the first step is to find out what being godly actually means.

The apostle Paul in Galatians 5.22-23 wrote that “… the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control”. These attributes originate from God and are unnatural to the human heart. But through the power of the Holy Spirit we are renewed and become more like Christ. Displaying the fruits of the Spirit DOES NOT require prosperity. Simply offering the last chair in a church service to a stranger is an act of kindness. There are many ways to express the fruits of the Spirit in which money is not central; in fact to make money central would limit the power of the Spirit to change one’s life.

To be honest it just doesn’t make sense some people desire to be materially wealthy for the sake of giving to others when there are so many other ways to live a godly life. Is it because we want to appear successful in a worldly sense or have the best of both worlds, knowing we have security in our material riches? We have more power to carry out God’s will when we trust in His promise of eternal life, because we have everything we could possibly need right NOW. Our life is a write off the moment we become a Christian because if we die we still live, we have full confidence to be courageous and bold knowing these things. Jesus said in Luke 9.23-24 that “… if anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it”. Simply having a lot of money doesn’t really compare in encouraging courageousness and boldness for Christ. Sacrifice is part of the deal of being a Christian, and going against the worldly tide means saying no to things we might normally say yes to. Money doesn’t really make it any easier to say no to worldly things, but the having the fruits of the Spirit like self control and patience do help.

In 2 Timothy 3.12 the apostle Paul said that “… everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted”. Unfortunately I’ve heard too many prosperity teachers always talk about life getting better, leaving the suffering part out which is fundamental to Christian faith. Andrew Heard commented on the difference between Bible based teaching and the prosperity gospel in an issue of The Briefing. He stated that “the difference doesn’t lie in the conviction that God can and does bless his people with physical healing or material prosperity, as this has always been accepted as biblical; the difference lies in the conviction that Christians ought to expect God to bless them physically and materially here and now [prosperity teaching]” (Heard, 2006, p. 10). Personally I get offended when a pastor at a Sunday service tells me that God wants to prosper me, I don’t go to church because I want more money. I go simply because God chose me to belong in his kingdom and opened my eyes up to his truth, everything God says makes sense, everything the prosperity teacher says doesn’t make sense. I believe Jesus Christ died to save us from our sins and has conquered death, being raised to life by perfectly obeying the law, not massing immense amounts of money to pay off our spiritual debt. Security lies in trusting God’s promise of the life to come; not trying to stay alive in this world by material riches, covering our insecurity by saying we’ll use it to give to other people. This world may revolve around money, but God’s world revolves around Christ.

The apostle Paul didn’t appear to lead a life that was getting better after he became a Christian, as he was eventually martyred (Shelley, 1995). This actually raises an interesting question; can prosperity teachers advocate sacrifice for Christ when they keep telling us life will get better? Surely those who are martyred are godly Christians, but wouldn’t that involve suffering? Either those Christians truly died for Christ in the most sacrificial way or they weren’t listening properly to prosperity teachers. I think those martyrs were listening to God and leading the way in boldness for Christ.

In the following video, Pastor Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill Church in Seattle comments on the unbiblical view of pain, suffering, broken relationships and anxiety in the lives of Christians as preached from the pulpit of Joel Osteen (Senior Pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas).

One man who faced tremendous adversity and trial from the false teaching of the Roman Catholic Church during the 16th century was Martin Luther. He is widely recognised as a major theologian and reformer who stimulated the movement of the Protestant Church towards Biblical doctrine. During this period the Roman Catholic Church taught that indulgences could be bought with money to release one from the temporal penalties of sin. Martin Luther was opposed to such teaching and his argument has striking resemblance today for prosperity teachers: “in our day we are taught by the doctrine of men to seek nothing but merits, rewards, and the things that are ours; of Christ we have made only a taskmaster far harsher than Moses” (Luther, 16th C., p. 41). Let alone the drift from Biblical teaching, the problem with indulgences and prosperity teaching is that it encourages and even attempts to justify greed for money in order to please God.

It is not so much the donation of money itself that pleases God, but rather the desire to give of what one already has. In Luke 18.10-14 Jesus told “two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men – robbers, evildoers, adulterers – or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted”. From the parable of the Pharisee and tax collector we can see that God takes notice of our heart more than the outwardly actions that we may perform.

As Martin Luther put it; “good works do not make a good man, but a good man does good works” (Luther, 16th C., p. 32). Having Christ as number one in life means desiring to become more like Him. Often a good man who performs good works makes a sacrifice, putting the welfare of others before his own. Christ put our interests before His own, freely dying on the cross for our sake, so that we could be reconciled to God. His heart was in the right place and a prosperous life was not required to purchase our eternity.

As Christ suffered in the world against a culture of hatred and selfishness, we too should prepare for suffering by simply being different, saying “no” to the way things are done. We can be glad that Christ chose us to serve Him and reside in His everlasting kingdom. In Romans 5.3-4 it says “… rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope”. We can be glad that Christ chose us to serve Him and reside in His everlasting kingdom. The promise of eternal life with God and everything that is good is what gives us hope. Everything will not be perfect in this life, but it will be in the next.

It isn’t the promise of a material return on faith that provides hope. Joel Osteen commented that if you tithe your income, God will “make sure you get promoted. He’ll cause you to get the best deals in life” (p. 256). If we’re doing things for God for worldly returns then we haven’t really matured as a Christian. God’s love is pure and is not motivated by selfish greed. We have a decision to make, to listen to the gospel according to Christ, or the gospel according to Joel.

Waiting until marriage to have sex is the best way to enjoy life as God intended. There are good reasons behind God’s instruction which improves relationship building and also safeguards our physical, mental and spiritual health. Avoiding sex before marriage is possible by seeking out the strength of Christ.

God has given us many things richly to enjoy and some guidelines as well. He has defined some areas as ‘no go zones’ as far as our behaviour is concerned. Essentially all God’s rules are for our benefit. Nowhere is this more clearly seen than in the way he has given one of his greatest gifts: human sexuality.

This is a ‘relational’ gift: ideally one woman and one man relate for life in all ways and not least at the sexual level. New humans are formed by a couple’s relating and their relationship sustains and enriches the whole of their lives. The Bible is quite clear about aspects that need to be part of such a relationship and just as clear about what should not be included. Commitment, faithfulness and the general potential for children rank as high positives. Aggression, lust and promiscuousness are all strong negatives.

Abstinence from sex until marriage is key for building an intimate and long lasting relationship. It draws two people closer together emotionally and is a special time when each person can spend time getting to know one another. The desire to avoid sex before marriage encourages self control which ultimately demonstrates trust to a partner. In turn this trust allows vulnerability towards each other producing a fruitful and intimate relationship.

A relationship with a regular pattern of worldly lust draws attention away from a true and deep relationship because lust is selfish. A truly satisfying relationship is expressed where one is mindful of the other in selfless thought and action. Lust is harmful because it seeks objects of desire to please oneself first and often without regard to the consequences. Promiscuity is part of lust, that degrades trust because it lacks self control and tends to view sex and people more casually. Sex is a sacred and beautiful part of marriage, and shouldn’t be seen as a casual act to satisfy superficial desires and insecurities.

Bible interpretation

Sex allows a couple to become like one person, they are joined together to stay together. God designed sex exclusively for a married couple as the following Bible verses reveal.

In Proverbs 5.15-17 from the Bible it says, “You should be faithful to your wife, just as you take water from your own well. And don’t be like a stream from which just any woman can have a drink. Save yourself for your wife and don’t have sex with other women“.

Here we see that sex is reserved for marriage and that the married couple would have an intimate relationship because they share a level of relating that exists with no other person apart from their spouse (marriage partner). Sex defines marriage and to have sex with someone other than the spouse would be adultery (cheating on the spouse). Sex gives meaning to the marriage because limiting sex to one partner, which is the spouse, expresses commitment and encourages the couple to invest emotionally in each other because they know they will remain together until death parts them.

In 1 Corinthians 6.15-16 from the Bible it says, “Don’t you know that your bodies are part of the body of Christ? Is it right for me to join part of the body of Christ to a prostitute? No, it isn’t! Don’t you know that a man who does that becomes part of her body? The Scriptures say, “The two of them will be like one person”“.

It’s obvious that one should avoid having sex with a prostitute, but is it because she is called a prostitute or because of the acts that are carried out? A prostitute is known for having sex with more than one person without any strings attached, and more specifically commitment is not a prerequisite for sex. There is no condition for a prostitute to be committed to one person now or in the future, doing so would hinder their profession. To have sex before marriage would be like having sex with a prostitute in the sense that there is no commitment involved.

Christ loves and died for all of us so that we can receive God’s grace and the gift of eternal life. There is no distinction between prostitutes or law abiding citizens or people that hold a higher social status in this case. The purpose of 1 Corinthians 6.15-16 is not so much to pick on prostitutes, but to talk about their actions as an example of sexual immorality, in which all people, and not just prostitutes, experience temptation to sin (or do things their own way, instead of God’s way).

In Mark 10.6-9 from the Bible it says, “… in the beginning God made a man and a woman. That’s why a man leaves his father and mother and gets married. He becomes like one person with his wife. Then they are no longer two people, but one. And no one should separate a couple that God has joined together“.

When two people become like one person through sex, they are joined together with the purpose of not separating. Sex is only ever for the marriage partner.

From Proverbs 5.15-17 we see that sex is saved for marriage, from Corinthians 6.15-16 we see that sex in marriage has a purpose because it joins two people together, and from Mark 10.6-9 we see how sacred sex and marriage are because God designed these to join a couple with no point of separation.

Marriage is the way of declaring to God, yourself, your partner and your friends and family that you will remain with your partner until the end of your short life in this world. Marriage involves two people committing their vow to God (spiritual commitment), willingly committing themselves to each other until one dies (emotional commitment) and joining together as one in the act of sex (physical commitment).

How far is too far?
Pastor Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill Church in Seattle explains from a Biblical perspective the boundaries in physical activity for a couple that are not married in the following video. Mark also briefly mentions in the video the topic of birth control for a married couple. Full detail of this can be found on his blog post where certain forms of birth control are described as permissible and other forms are explained as sinful.

Relational thoughts

Some thoughts for men
It can be difficult at times following sex abstinence. However there is a purpose in not having sex before marriage. The desire to avoid temptation produces discipline, strength, clear thought and most of all the character of love.

Women tend to focus on emotional needs where as men have more physical needs. However both genders obviously have desires that are emotional as well as physical. Finding ways apart from sex to relate to your partner will improve the relationship. Try using your time before marriage to learn how to please your partner emotionally without sexual activity.

A real man will look out for his partner’s best interests. This includes protecting her heart from the harmful consequences of sex before marriage. A real man will not pressure his partner into sexual activity. Many women find it hard to say no, even when they prefer to wait until marriage.

Some thoughts for women
A woman may find it tempting to appeal to the physical temptations which a man experiences. A woman must not encourage a man to consider what she wouldn’t otherwise; she needs to be aware of her actions. God looks out for our best interests and it his him we must trust before anyone else. Sexual activity in God’s purpose finds its proper place in the context of two people sharing their entire lives, not just part of them.

Demonstrating that you want to avoid sex before marriage can earn trust from your partner. The more your partner can trust you the more likely he will feel comfortable getting close emotionally. If you want to be special and well respected then focus on supporting your partner in avoiding temptation.

Men are obviously attracted to a woman’s beauty. This includes inner beauty which comes from the heart and its desires. Expressing beautiful character without sexual insinuation will contribute to bonding and a more stable relationship. A boyfriend who loves you for who you are on the inside is more likely to stick around than a guy who is solely focused on your appearance.

The five love languages
Pastor Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill Church in Seattle talks about the five love languages (originally developed by Dr. Gary Chapman) for understanding and relating to your partner in the following video. When Mark talks about the love language of touch, it should be clear that physical non-sexual touch is permissible before marriage, but not sexual touch.

Sexual compatibility excuse

If you haven’t heard it already, you are bound to hear this one – “a couple must have sex before marriage to determine if they’re sexually compatibile“. This statement is misleading and is a lie.

Sexual compatibility is confounded particularly to those who have had a history of more than one sexual partner. It would not be uncommon for such people to be plagued by thoughts and considerations in comparing each sexual partner, meaning that sex in marriage is potentially degraded. Let’s face it, if you haven’t had any previous sexual partners, then sex with your spouse is the best! For those who have had previous sexual partners, God forgives and it is through him that you will find healing and restoration. Look forward and not backwards and you will see that your spouse is your only sexual partner and so there is no point comparing.

As one gets older and wiser it becomes apparent that the best sex is relational, of which trust and commitment are key emotional factors. Trust and commitment is expressed purely through the sacred act of marriage. God designed us to enjoy life a particular way, and venturing off his path will not be the most satisfying. Tim and Beverly LaHaye, in their book titled The Act of Marriage (Zondervan, 1998), cited two studies that suggested Christians were more sexually satisfied than people subscribing to no particular religion.

If one must have sex with many partners to find a sexually compatible match, as opposed to simply finding sexual satisfaction in only ever one partner, it says something worth keeping in mind. It’s much harder to find sexual satisfaction using our own knowledge of what makes great sex. For the obedient believers, God will enhance all aspects of marriage because he is for marriage, and sex is one such aspect. Listening to God about what makes great character will be a boost to sexual satisfaction. Great character is humility, patience and commitment for starters; and demonstration of such traits will help get the relational side of sex right which is key to getting the best sex right. As for the technical “know-how” side of sex, learning this together in marriage will be a wonderful bonding experience as you get to explore and know your spouse. Learning off one another is intimate and relational and beats taking away the mystery of sex and knowing what to do before you’ve even had sex!

Determining sexual compatibility does not require sexual experience. First, listen to the way of God in things like how to relate to each other as sex is not simply functional. Second, use common sense and talk about it with your partner before marriage in a safe non-tempting environment. If you want sex four times a week and your partner wants sex once a year, you might be in for a problem. These two methods suffice and any other method may be in danger of opposing God and therefore degrading any chance of sexual compatibility.

Facts

Premarital sex and regret
Most teenagers regret an early commencement of experience in sex (63% of boys and 69% of girls).

A female psychiatrist once spoke of her own sexual experimentation in her teenage years, “The longest-standing, deepest wound I gave myself was heartfelt; that sick, used feeling of having given a precious part of myself–my soul–to so many and for nothing, still aches. I never imagined I’d pay so dearly and for so long.“

Resisting sex before marriage (it’s never too late!)

It doesn’t matter what sins we have committed in the past. It’s about who we are now that matters to God and makes us the people we are. Resisting sex before marriage will bring healthy benefits and allow a person to be more Christ centred. If we belong to Jesus then we will inherit eternal life and the blessings of God’s kingdom.

Christians will be completely free from sin after death and live an everlasting life full of love, without pain or suffering. A key concern is that Satan tries to keep people away from the gift of eternal life. The next paragraph explains some of his strategies.

Satan tries to prevent non-Christians from hearing God’s truth and inheriting eternal life by distracting them with sin. For those who are Christians, he will attempt to turn them away from God. A method Satan uses is to make them feel unworthy because of the sin they commit. Don’t be discouraged by these traps! By God’s grace and our faith in Jesus we are made acceptable to God, not by obedience. However that is no excuse to do whatever we want.

1 John 1.8, 1 Corinthians 6.11-12 and Romans 8.12-15 point out the position that believers hold in regards to sin and following the way of God.

1 John 1.8: “If we say that we have not sinned, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth isn’t in our hearts“.

1 Corinthians 6.11-12: “… now the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and the power of God’s Spirit have washed you and made you holy and acceptable to God’. Some of you say, “We can do anything we want to.” But I tell you that not everything is good for us. So I refuse to let anything have power over me“. The Holy Spirit, also known as God’s Spirit; lives in believers to testify for God’s grace, and provide renewal and guidance according to the way of God.

Romans 8.12-15: “we must not live to satisfy our desires. If you do, you will die. But you will live, if by the help of God’s Spirit you say “No” to your desires. Only those who are led by God’s Spirit are his children. God’s Spirit doesn’t make us slaves who are afraid of him. Instead, we become his children and call him our Father“.

Whether Christian or non-Christian, we are all sinners before God in this life. However the mark of a Christian by the power of the Holy Spirit is the desire to turn away from sin, so that it no longer becomes a habit. Christians do not use God’s saving grace as an excuse to do whatever they want, rather they understand that the desire to live by God’s word is the best way and only way to truly live.

Christians have the Holy Spirit because of God’s grace and their faith in Jesus Christ. By the power of the Holy Spirit a person can live a new life that they have not known before. A Christian is someone who has made an agreement with God through prayer. The agreement involves a person:
1. Admitting they have sinned and need forgiveness to restore their relationship with God
2. Accepting Jesus as their Lord and Saviour

An example of such a prayer is:
“Dear Father, I know that I am a sinner and need forgiveness. I believe Jesus was a sacrifice for my sin. I want to turn away from sin. I now invite Jesus Christ to come into my heart and life as my personal saviour. I am willing to follow and obey Christ as the Lord of my life.“
